Updates on Health, Haiti, WordCampNYC and Growth Groups

Yeahhh. Things have been a little hectic over here in LizLand HQ.

Healthy Changes

I’ve been thinking a lot about my health lately. Well, more than just thinking, I started making some changes. I’ve written about it mostly on my Tumblr, but I will probably move my health discussions elsewhere, either on a separate Tumblr, a new blog on this domain, or both.

I went on a soul-searching fast (I’m being dramatic here lol), then I became a Raw Foodist. Or at least I am trying out raw foodism for some time. It’s quite the interesting body experiment. Almost like the exact opposite of Super Size Me, only without the doctors. I’ve lost 3 pounds in 5 days of being a Raw Foodist, right after having lost 40 lbs from juice fasting. Most importantly, I feel like a different person on the inside.

I have developed many conspiracy theories about the food industry, the dieting industry and more after having gone through a decent part of this process. I will share those thoughts at some point. Maybe on the new health blog, or maybe even through vlogging. So much to share!

Haiti Fundraising Update

My Haiti fundraising ends this Friday! I am excited and nervous about it. I’m pretty sure I have reached my goal, between online payments, pledges and in-person donations. That is SO awesome. I was skeptical anyone would want to give to this cause lol. More on that next week. Hopefully everything shakes out by Friday so I know my final tally. I have learned so much about myself during this process! I have so much to share about my thoughts on the generosity of others (and lack thereof), my own generosity, online giving, and faith. I’ll probably pen a post about this sometime next week.

WordCampNYC

I am speaking at WordCampNYC this weekend! For those of you that don’t know what a WordCamp is, it’s a local conference for people who develop, design and use WordPress. There are several WordCamp conferences held around the world every year, and this weekend is NYC’s WordCamp.

I’m pretty excited about my session proposal being accepted. I applied on a whim, mostly because I attended last year for the first time and learned so much about the WordPress community in meatspace. My session is called “Bare Bones Blogging: Starting out with The Perfect WP Installation” and it’s generally for new or intermediate bloggers. I have spent many years installing and setting up a WP site, so I thought I would share my must-have plugins and WP settings, and hopefully, I’ll share a little more if I have time in my session. I am nervous about speaking! It’s been a while since I’ve spoken in front of an audience all alone. But, I know I know my stuff so I am not too worried.

Also, one of my favorite people, Allan Cole, is presenting too, in a session called “Practice Makes Perfect: Using best practices when developing themes for WordPress.”  His sessions are usually pretty entertaining and very helpful. It’s important to me that tech speakers of color are supported, so I thought I would mention Allan as well Updates on Health, Haiti, WordCampNYC and Growth Groups

Come to WordCamp if you can! Registration is only $30 and totally worth it, it’s here in Midtown, and I would love to see your lovely beautiful face! I don’t bite. At least, I don’t think I do.

Growth Grouping

I started co-leading a growth group at my church earlier this month. A growth group is a weekly small group bible study, and my church has like 80 or so that happen every week around the city. I am a growth group leader n00b, but it’s been a streamlined process for me, so that’s been great. MY GG rawks and I am enjoying the process of getting to know more people who go to my church!

It’s been an interesting process this year, moving from a church spectator to a church participator. I love love LOVE my church! I missed church this weekend for the first time in months (was out of town), and I feel all off kilter due to not having seen my supergreat pastors and church friends on Sunday. I get so recharged just by being around other Christians. But luckily I do have my weekly growth group, so that helps Updates on Health, Haiti, WordCampNYC and Growth Groups

That’s what’s been up with me. What about you?
